Our very own James Renfro Thompson is celebrating a milestone birthday this February, and what better place to toast the start of his best decade yet than Cabo San Lucas, Mexico?
Party central is the beautiful Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort.
This all-inclusive, adults-only hotel--a personal favorite of ours--is located on a secluded stretch of beach a short drive from the downtown party scene and adjacent to the legendary Quivira Golf Club. It has four restaurants and four bars on property, but Pacifica is one of four Pueblo Bonito resorts in Cabo, all of which are covered in the all-inclusive plan, so you'll have more dining options (a total of 27 restaurants and 16 bars) than you'll have time to sample in just a long weekend visit.

For anyone arriving on Thursday, plan to join us for a casual happy hour at the Peninsula Bar to get the weekend started. We'll head to dinner after.

Is it even a trip to Mexico if you don't at some point find yourself dancing on the bar in some beachy dive? After dinner at the resort on Thursday night we're going to grab a ride into town to hit up the local party scene!

Private Tequila Tasting
Even professional drinkers like all of us can stand to learn something new, right? After your siesta, join us for a guided tequila and mezcal tasting at the resort. (And if tequila takes you back to freshman year of college and sounds like it would be just as bad of a decision now as it was then, let us know. You're still welcome to BYOB and come for the snacks!)

Jim's Birthday Dinner on the Beach
Immediately after the tequila tasting, it's time for a sunset dinner and a toast to the birthday boy. Make your way down to our private setup on the beach, and come hungry and ready to celebrate! We couldn't pick just one cuisine for the big event, so there will be five food stations--a sampling of Baja's best and Jimmy's favorites--just for us.

Beach Bonfire
The resort is creating a private beach bonfire just for our post-dinner pleasure. There will be marshmallows and all that jazz, but more importantly we'll have a bartender just for us. If we get bored with the sound of the crashing waves, we'll crank the music and get the beach dance party started.

Deep Sea Fishing
Our ten brave fishermen are headed out to catch our dinner bright and early on Saturday morning. We'll be running side bets at the pool for who catches the biggest fish, who drinks the most beer, and who is the first to take a little nap on board the boat.
What do I need to do to prepare?
1. Start training. Like, now. And no, we don't mean joining a gym so you look extra hot in your Speedo. We mean drinking. You'll thank us later.
2. Double check you have a valid passport. The trip is going to be epic, but we assume you will eventually want to come home.
3. Consider making dinner reservations and booking any off-resort excursions or spa appointments, if desired. Aside from the events above, we plan to spend most of our time just chilling at the resort. However, Cabo is known for fun water sports and our hotel has a lovely spa if that's your thing. Rachel's massage is already scheduled, and they're happy to also get you booked now if you wish. Check out the spa menu and email them at [email protected] to schedule. If you want to ensure you get an appointment at your desired time, you should book now.
We also got some intel that it may be helpful (though not strictly necessary) to book dinner in advance to avoid any COVID/staffing issues, so we have reservations at La Frida on Thursday night at 6:30pm, Peninsula on Saturday night at 7:00pm, and the Quivira Steakhouse on Sunday night at 7:00pm. You should definitely dine wherever your heart--and tummy--desires, but you're welcome to hang with us, too. The list of all the restaurants is available here (best viewed on a computer) and you can make your reservations by contacting the concierge at [email protected].
4. Figure out airport transportation. We recommend booking a shuttle through the resort. If you're part of the big group coming in hot from TJ around noon on Thursday, you already have a private ride to the hotel lined up, but you'll still need to figure out how you're getting back to the airport with a hangover a few days later. One-way or round-trip transportation can be booked directly through the hotel's preferred provider (put "Thompson Celebration 2022" in the comments to secure our discounted rate), though you may end up meeting new friends and stopping at a few other resorts before you get to ours. Look at it as a free city tour? There are also cabs, or hitchhiking. You do you.

The hotel has also extended the rates on our room block before and after the party weekend, so you're welcome to make it an even longer vacation if you wish.
San Diego friends, consider flying in and out of Tijuana. The Cross Border Xpress bridge makes it super safe and easy to get from the U.S. side of the border into the TIJ airport, and non-stop flights are a fraction of the cost of flying out of SAN.
